This is a work of "hard" science fiction, which means there is solid
science behind almost all aspects of the story. But rest assured that you can
skim over anything that seems too technical, or outside your field, without
missing important plot aspects.
However, if you are inquisitive (as I hope you are), there are details in
the References and Notes section at the back. Here's a simple example referring
to the first page of the story:

The TinyURL format avoids the need to type long strings. You could find many of
these subjects on your own via a conventional search, but the links here have
been selected to be especially relevant.
